- unrealized loss → A paper loss from assets falling in value before the company actually sells them.
- preferred dividends → Payments owed to a special class of shareholders before common shareholders get anything.
Strategy reported an $8.2 billion Q2 net loss. The company blamed bitcoin's price decline for the hit. Its SEC filing showed an $8.32 billion loss on digital assets as of June 30.
The accounting loss is not the only number that matters. Strategy held 843,775 BTC as of July 5. The filing says it paid an aggregate $63.69 billion for the stack. CoinDesk says the company also built a $3.75 billion U.S. dollar reserve.
Then came the line that changes the story. CoinDesk reported Strategy sold about $218.4 million of bitcoin under a new BTC Monetization Program. The proceeds support preferred dividends. That breaks from the old one-way accumulation pitch.
If you're holding this stock for pure bitcoin exposure, your bag now has a second moving part. Strategy is still a bitcoin treasury company. It is also managing cash needs, preferred payouts, note repurchases, and a Digital Credit push.
Bitcoin Magazine put bitcoin near $64,745 in its July 30 coverage, down 26% year-to-date. CoinDesk's market ticker showed $64,714.22. The tape matches the story: lower bitcoin, bigger accounting loss, and less room for the clean accumulator narrative.
Strategy also raised $17.06 billion through stock offerings this year. It bought back $1.5 billion of convertible notes and authorized $1 billion in share repurchases, per CoinDesk. The next quarter is about source of funds. Cash reserve first is one story. More bitcoin sales is another.
Strategy's accumulation-only pitch is weaker after it sold bitcoin for preferred dividends. That action changes the trade investors thought they bought.
By the next quarterly update, watch whether Strategy sells more than $218.4 million of bitcoin under the monetization program or holds sales at zero.
