Bitcoin jumped 21.5%. Miner stocks are no longer simple Bitcoin bets.
The public miners are turning into power-and-compute companies, and BTC rallies no longer explain the whole trade.

- →CryptoSlate reported BTC rose 21.5% from the Aug. 17 close through Aug. 21, while most tracked miners fell.
- →The split matters because TeraWulf, Hut 8, and IREN now report large HPC, AI, or data-center exposure.
- →Watch Q3 reports for whether AI revenue grows faster than mining revenue, because that decides how investors price them.
- HPC → High-performance computing means renting powerful data-center capacity to customers that need heavy processing work.
- ARR → Annual recurring revenue is the yearly sales a company expects from active contracts that repeat.
- Capex → Capital expenditure means money spent on major long-term assets, such as data centers, power equipment, or mining machines.
Bitcoin rose 21.5%, and miner stocks did not follow.
CryptoSlate reported that BTC climbed from the Aug. 17 close through Aug. 21. Six of seven large U.S.-listed miners it tracked ended lower over the same stretch. That is not a simple Bitcoin trade anymore.
The reason is visible in company filings. TeraWulf said Q2 revenue was $44.8 million as of June 30. It reported $31.9 million from HPC lease revenue. That is a data-center business inside a former Bitcoin mining story.
Hut 8 gave the same signal from a different angle. Its Aug. 4 SEC exhibit showed 949 MW of contracted AI data-center capacity. The company also cited about $26.6 billion in aggregate base-term contract value.
IREN's mix is even cleaner. The company reported $70.5 million of AI Cloud Services revenue for the June quarter. Bitcoin Mining revenue was $66.7 million over the same period. Its Aug. 27 SEC exhibit also showed $4 billion of contracted ARR for 2026 capacity and $1 billion operating ARR today.
If you bought miners as a simple BTC beta trade, this matters now. The stock can fall while Bitcoin rises because investors are pricing power, capex, contracts, and AI execution. The catalyst is named, and it is not only mining rewards.
This does not make the miners worse businesses. It makes them different businesses. A higher BTC price still helps mining margins, but it no longer controls the full equity story. The next reports need to show whether AI demand is turning into cash, not only contract headlines.
TeraWulf, Hut 8, and IREN are leaving the pure-miner category behind because their reported AI and HPC numbers are now too large to treat as side projects.
By Q3 2026 earnings, watch whether IREN's AI Cloud Services revenue stays above Bitcoin Mining revenue for another quarter.
