Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer monetary network with a native asset called BTC. Miners use proof of work to order transactions, while independently run nodes enforce the rules, including the 21 million bitcoin supply limit. The price is market-driven, so a fixed protocol supply does not make BTC stable or low-risk.

What Bitcoin actually does
Bitcoin lets people transfer value without asking one company to maintain the ledger. Transactions are grouped into blocks, miners compete to add the next block, and full nodes reject blocks that break the shared rules. BTC is the asset used inside that system and the thing markets trade.
That distinction matters. Bitcoin the network can keep producing valid blocks while bitcoin the asset has a violent price day. Network uptime, settlement demand, custody flows, leverage, and the broader risk mood can all move on different clocks.
Why the supply story is simple and the market story is not
Bitcoin issuance follows a schedule and the total supply is capped by consensus rules. New supply reaching miners falls over time through halvings. Existing holders, miners, funds, companies, and traders still decide how much BTC is available at any price, so the liquid market can feel much tighter or looser than the headline maximum supply suggests.
A fixed maximum does not create a price floor. Demand can fall, leveraged positions can be forced out, custodians can fail, and policy can change how easily capital reaches the asset. Scarcity is one input. Market structure decides how that input meets real buyers and sellers today.
Four signals worth watching.
Liquidity and the macro mood
Interest-rate expectations, the dollar, and appetite for risk can change how much capital is willing to hold BTC.
Fund and treasury flows
Spot funds and corporate balance sheets can create visible, concentrated demand. Redemptions and sales reverse the same plumbing.
Leverage
Perpetual futures and options can accelerate a move when crowded positions are liquidated or dealers rebalance hedges.
Miner economics
Block rewards, transaction fees, energy costs, and financing pressure affect how miners operate and when they may sell inventory.
Risk belongs on the same page.
- BTC can fall sharply even when the network is operating normally.
- Leverage can turn an ordinary move into forced selling or a short squeeze.
- Custody, exchange, lender, and wrapped-token risk sit outside Bitcoin's core rules but can still cost holders money.
- Regulatory and tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and can change access or demand.

The beginner version.
Is Bitcoin the same thing as BTC?
Bitcoin usually names the network and protocol. BTC is the ticker for its native asset. People use the words interchangeably, but the network can work normally while the traded asset is volatile.
Why can Bitcoin fall if supply is capped?
A cap limits maximum units, not the price. The price still reflects current demand, available sellers, liquidity, leverage, and the broader market mood.
Does a Bitcoin ETF remove crypto risk?
No. A spot fund changes the access and custody wrapper. It does not remove BTC price risk, market closures, fees, tracking differences, or the fund's own operational structure.
