Strategy just sold 1,638 bitcoin. The buyer story now has a cash problem.
The sale helped fund dividends, a bigger dollar reserve, and an STRC buyback. That is not the old one-way Bitcoin pitch.

Strategy sold 1,638 bitcoin last week.
SEC filings show its holdings fell to 842,138 BTC as of Aug. 2. CoinDesk reported the sale raised $104.73 million.
The money did not just sit there. Strategy used proceeds alongside common-stock issuance to pay preferred dividends, increase its dollar reserve, and buy back STRC. And that's the catch: the bitcoin buyer is now also a cash manager.
CoinDesk said Strategy sold 3.01 million common shares for $290.6 million. It also repurchased 912,143 STRC shares for $81.2 million. The company's dollar reserve increased by $250 million to $4 billion.
If you're holding MSTR for pure bitcoin exposure, this matters. The balance sheet now has more moving parts than buy BTC, issue stock, repeat. Preferred dividends create cash needs. Cash needs can turn a holder into a seller.
Strategy said over the weekend it would keep STRC's annual dividend rate at 12%, according to CoinDesk. The report also said Strategy does not plan to recommend a reduction until STRC trades consistently near $100.
The tape matches the story. This was not a panic sale, based on the stated uses. It was the cash bill becoming visible.
The number to watch is the next BTC balance. One sale can be explained. A pattern would rewrite the market's simplest Strategy story.
Strategy's choice to sell BTC while defending STRC was a clear signal that its preferred shares now compete with its bitcoin accumulation story.
Before September, watch Strategy's next SEC filing for another BTC balance drop or a flat 842,138 BTC holding number.
