Rakuten is giving away dog coins for dog photos. Japan's retail apps found a better funnel.
SHIB is becoming less like an exchange listing in Japan and more like loyalty points with a meme attached.

- →Rakuten Wallet reportedly launched a 2026 dog-photo contest with SHIB prizes and one DOGE grand prize for X users.
- →The real story is distribution: Rakuten and Mercari can put memecoins inside apps people already use daily.
- →Watch whether campaign users become repeat buyers, because free coins only matter if they turn into funded accounts.
- SHIB → SHIB is a dog-themed meme coin that trades like a crypto asset but spreads mostly through internet culture.
- Green List → Japan's Green List is a regulator-backed shortcut for crypto assets that approved exchanges can list more easily.
- Funnel → A funnel is the path that turns a regular app user into someone who opens and funds a crypto account.
Rakuten is turning dog photos into SHIB rewards.
U.Today reported that Rakuten Wallet launched a Photo Contest 2026 campaign on X. Users post dog photos for a shot at 11,111,111 SHIB, worth about 10,000 yen. There are reportedly 11 SHIB winners, plus one grand prize of 1,111 DOGE, worth about 18,000 yen.
The thing is, the prize size isn't the story. Rakuten is pointing a memecoin at a reported 44 million users through a familiar consumer app. That does not feel like investing. It feels like points, coupons, and a cute dog post.
That's why this matters. Japan's retail superplatforms are quietly doing what crypto exchanges keep trying to do with referral codes. They are making the first crypto touch feel low-stakes. If you're new to this market, a 10,000 yen SHIB prize is easier to understand than a trading screen.
The setup got easier after JVCEA added SHIB to its Green List in November 2025. Per U.Today, Rakuten has also tied SHIB into Rakuten Pay across 5 million retail acceptance points. That turns SHIB from a ticker into something users can meet inside payments, rewards, and app habits.
Mercari is running the same play from another angle. U.Today reported that Mercari added SHIB trading this month through Mercoin, its crypto unit. Mercari reportedly has 23 million monthly users. Mercoin's financial statements reportedly show 4 million crypto account holders, with 85% making their market debut through Mercari.
That 85% is the only number that matters. Exchanges sell access to markets. Mercari sells old clothes, collectibles, and the feeling that trying crypto is just another app feature. Actually, that is a stronger funnel than most trading platforms have.
There is a caveat. The campaign details in the brief come from secondary reports, not a Rakuten Wallet press release. So the exact prize mechanics need official confirmation before anyone treats this as a clean data point.
Still, the direction is clear. Japan's memecoin onboarding is moving through retail apps, not just exchanges. SHIB does not need every Rakuten user to become a trader. It only needs enough of them to treat the dog coin like digital merchandise, then come back twice.
Rakuten's choice to wrap SHIB in a dog-photo contest is smarter than another trading promo because it makes the first crypto action feel like a rewards habit, not a market bet.
By the end of Q3 2026, watch whether Rakuten reports campaign entries converting into Wallet signups or SHIB purchases, with anything above 5% proving this was more than a cute giveaway.
