- →Citadel Securities invested $400 million in Crypto.com at a $20 billion valuation, marking the exchange's first institutional funding round in ten years.
- →Citadel co-founded EDX Markets, reportedly backed Kraken, and is applying for a banking charter. This is infrastructure positioning, not a price bet.
- →Watch for Crypto.com to file for a US derivatives license or announce a tokenized-securities product within six months. That is the test.
- tokenized securities → Traditional financial assets like stocks or bonds recorded on a blockchain so they can trade more like crypto.
- market maker → A firm that keeps trading active by constantly buying and selling, then earning small spreads across many trades.
- derivatives → Contracts whose value comes from another asset, like Bitcoin futures or options.
Citadel Securities put $400 million into Crypto.com today, per a Thursday press release. The deal values the Singapore-based exchange at $20 billion.
Self-funding is officially over. Crypto.com grew from a 2016 card and rewards app into a major retail exchange without one institutional round.
Citadel is not a passive backer. The firm co-founded EDX Markets in 2023, a regulated trading venue for institutions. It also filed for a national trust bank charter with the OCC this year. Bitcoin Magazine reports Citadel previously put $200 million into Kraken.
The announced use of funds is direct: tokenized securities, derivatives, real-world assets, and prediction markets. Crypto.com says the goal is 24/7 trading for traditional and digital assets. Citadel's trading background makes that plan more than a press release.
If you hold CRO or trade on Crypto.com, this backing raises the platform's growth ceiling. Institutional desks tend to follow Citadel. The market just got bigger.
The only number that matters next is volume. Crypto.com's derivatives and tokenized-securities activity needs a measurable step up within 12 months. That is the test of whether the $400 million is going to work.
Crypto.com is leaving the US derivatives gap to Coinbase and Kraken if it waits. Citadel paid for market access, not a logo on the cap table.
Watch for Crypto.com to file for a US derivatives license or announce a tokenized-securities product within six months. If neither happens, the $400 million thesis stalled at the press release.
