Blockworks bought Messari for a reported $10M. Crypto data is now for machines.
The deal is less about owning another research brand and more about owning the API layer everyone else has to query.

- →Blockworks announced it bought Messari, linking its disclosure tools with Messari's data, API, research, and market-intelligence products.
- →The reported price matters because Messari was valued near $300 million in 2022, showing standalone research brands lost bargaining power.
- →Watch whether Blockworks keeps issuer claims separate from verified data as the combined API reaches customers.
- API → An API is a structured way for software systems to request and receive data from each other.
- issuer disclosures → Issuer disclosures are updates that token projects publish about supply, governance, finances, or other material changes.
- onchain assets → Onchain assets are tokens or other assets whose ownership and activity are recorded on a blockchain.
- system of record → A system of record is the main database other tools treat as the trusted source.
Blockworks bought Messari to merge crypto's data pipes.
The deal is not really about research brands. It is about who owns the database that exchanges, investors, token issuers, regulators, and bots query every day.
Blockworks used a loaded phrase for the target. It wants the combined company to become "a single system of record for all onchain assets," according to Bankless. That phrase matters. A system of record is not a newsletter. It is the table every downstream app treats as trusted until proven wrong.
Bitcoin Magazine reported this week that Blockworks paid just over $10 million for Messari. The same report says Messari was valued at approximately $300 million in 2022, citing The Wall Street Journal. That gap is the loudest number in the deal. Research alone did not hold the valuation.
Blockworks is bringing Messari's data, API, market-intelligence, and research products into its own disclosure and investor-relations tooling. At the product level, that shifts from reading reports to piping structured facts into workflows. If you're building a wallet, exchange listing process, or risk screen, a PDF is a bad interface.
The tradeoff is obvious. Issuer-side data can be faster, cleaner, and easier to standardize. It can also become too close to the people whose tokens it describes. The engineers know this; the marketing team pretends they don't.
Bitcoin Magazine says Messari CEO Diran Li will join Blockworks as a senior leader under Jason Yanowitz and Michael Ippolito. That makes this an operating integration, not just a logo swap. The hard part is merging data models, source rules, and API guarantees without quietly lowering the bar for verification.
This is a schema problem, not a content problem. Crypto has enough commentary. It does not have enough shared fields for supply changes, unlocks, governance actions, disclosures, and chain data that machines can trust.
The reported price also says something ugly about the old model. Messari raised a reported $35 million Series B and once carried a much higher valuation. Blockworks was valued at $192 million after its Series A extension, according to crypto.news. The buyer did not just buy a rival. It bought a bruised but still useful data layer.
The deal works if Blockworks separates issuer claims from verified facts at the API level. It fails if everything becomes one clean endpoint with fuzzy provenance. Your bag should not depend on whether a disclosure field came from a token team, an analyst, or chain data.
Crypto's information layer is officially moving from branded research pages to machine-readable rails. The winner will not be the firm with the best chart. It will be the one developers can query without asking, "who typed this?"
Blockworks made the right bet by folding Messari into disclosure tooling: crypto needs machine-readable records more than another research portal.
By the end of 2026, watch whether Blockworks publishes a public API schema that labels issuer-provided fields and verified fields across at least 50 assets.
