Traders just placed a $2.5B Bitcoin bet. The Fed is the catch.
The trade is big, capped, and timed for two days after the next rate decision. That is not retail impulse buying.

- →Traders placed $2.5B in notional bitcoin bull call spreads on Deribit this week, per CoinDesk data.
- →The trade pays if bitcoin finishes July between $70,000 and $72,000, so the target is precise and capped.
- →Watch bitcoin after the July 29 Fed meeting, because the July 31 expiry leaves only two trading days for confirmation.
- Bull call spread → A trade that bets on a price rise while limiting both the possible loss and the possible gain.
- Notional value → The headline size of a trade based on the contracts involved, not always the cash paid upfront.
- Expiry → The date when an options trade is settled or becomes worthless.
$2.5B in bitcoin option flow hit Deribit this week. CoinDesk reported traders bought 20,000 July 31 $70,000 calls and sold 20,000 $72,000 calls. Bitcoin traded at $64,138.92 as of July 18, after bouncing from under $58,000 earlier this month.
This is not a moonshot trade. The structure pays best if bitcoin closes between $70,000 and $72,000 by July 31. Above $72,000, the buyer gives up extra upside. Below $70,000, the premium is gone.
The timing is the point. Settlement lands two days after the Federal Reserve's July 29 rate decision. CoinDesk said markets priced a 75% to 80% chance of a hold at 3.5% to 3.75%.
If you're long bitcoin here, this is the number to watch. The trade says large options desks see a near-term path higher, but not an unlimited one. That is cash-sized conviction with a ceiling.
The macro setup is messy. June CPI and PPI cooled, helped by lower oil prices tied to a U.S.-Iran ceasefire. This week, fresh strikes disrupted Strait of Hormuz oil flows and sent WTI and Brent sharply higher, per the same CoinDesk report.
So the tape matches the story, for now. Bitcoin has recovered from the month's low, and traders paid for a defined shot at $72,000. The Fed decision decides whether that window opens or closes fast.
Large options desks choosing capped upside was the tell. A $2.5B trade aimed at $72,000 says they want the Fed window, not a blank-check breakout.
By the July 31 expiry, watch whether BTC settles above $70,000 on Deribit, because a close below that level kills the spread outright.
