South Korea raised rates for the first time in three years. Bitcoin on Upbit didn't move.
South Korea's retail crypto market just absorbed a rate hike and a 5% currency move without blinking. That tells you something about the demand underneath.

- →South Korea's central bank raised its benchmark rate 25bps to 2.75% today, its first hike in over three years, citing 3.2% headline inflation.
- →Bitcoin held above KRW 94.96M on Upbit even as the Korean won gained roughly 5% against the dollar over the past two weeks.
- →If BTC/KRW breaks below KRW 90M before August's scheduled Bank of Korea meeting, Korean retail is finally pricing in a sustained rate cycle.
- basis points (bps) → One basis point is one hundredth of a percent, so 25bps means the interest rate went up by 0.25%.
- Upbit → South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange, where users buy and sell crypto directly with Korean won.
- CPI (Consumer Price Index) → The main way governments measure inflation: how much a basket of everyday goods costs compared to a year ago. When CPI rises, prices are going up.
South Korea's central bank raised its benchmark rate 25bps to 2.75% this morning. That's the first hike in over three years, per CoinDesk.
The trigger is inflation. South Korea's headline CPI hit 3.2%, the highest reading since 2023. The Bank of Korea moved.
Bitcoin barely noticed. CoinDesk reported BTC sitting just below $65,000 in USD terms as of early Thursday KST. On Upbit, it held above KRW 94.96M.
That's the part worth watching. The Korean won has firmed roughly 5% against the dollar over the past two weeks, from about 1,560 to 1,480 per USD. A currency that strengthens that fast normally pressures local crypto prices. If the won goes up, BTC priced in Korean won should fall on currency math alone.
It didn't. Korean retail absorbed two weeks of won strength and a surprise rate hike without flinching. South Korea runs one of the most speculative crypto markets in the world. Retail participants there treat digital assets as high-stakes day trading. When a market like that holds through a macro shock, the demand underneath is real.
Your bag in KRW terms is holding, for now.
The Bank of Korea's household surveys are already slower and noisier than BTC/KRW as a sentiment tool. This morning's non-reaction told it more about domestic inflation expectations than its next survey round will. The central bank is sitting on better data than it knows.
BTC/KRW on Upbit breaking below KRW 90M before August's scheduled Bank of Korea meeting, which would confirm Korean retail has started pricing in a sustained rate cycle.
