- →Kraken launched 16 CFTC-regulated perpetual futures contracts for eligible U.S. customers through Kraken Pro on June 15.
- →The bigger story is market structure: U.S. traders now have a credible onshore route for a mostly offshore product.
- →Watch the CFTC before July 1, because the current no-action letter expires at the end of June 2026.
- Perpetual futures → A crypto contract that tracks an asset price and has no expiry date.
- Funding rate → A regular payment between traders that helps keep the contract price close to the spot price.
- CFTC → The U.S. regulator that oversees futures markets.
- No-action letter → A letter from a regulator saying it will not take enforcement action against a specific practice, creating a temporary legal window.
Kraken launched 16 U.S. crypto futures contracts on June 15.
The contracts trade through Kraken Pro and list on Bitnomial, a CFTC-licensed exchange, clearinghouse, and brokerage. Payward, Kraken's parent company, closed its Bitnomial acquisition in May 2026.
This is the first credible regulated U.S. venue for crypto perpetual futures at scale. The offshore market is officially being challenged on its own product.
CoinDesk reported that global perpetual futures volume topped $60 trillion in 2025. That number explains the rush. Perps are not a side market in crypto. They are where a lot of active trading already happens.
Kraken's launch covers nine assets, according to Bitcoin Magazine: BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, ADA, LINK, DOGE, LTC, and AVAX. Bankless reported 16 contracts, which likely reflects different contract formats or pairings across those assets.
The contracts use 8-hour funding at 7pm, 3am, and 11am CT. That mechanism helps pull the contract price back toward spot. If you're trading these products, funding is the fee that tells you who is leaning too hard.
The wallet integration is the actual edge. Kraken said these perps sit in the same futures wallet as existing CME-listed products. That lets traders manage both from one collateral pool instead of splitting cash across venues.
That is cash, not leverage. It also gives Kraken a cleaner pitch to professional traders who want U.S. rules, clearer custody, and fewer operational breaks.
The catalyst is named. The CFTC issued guidance in May 2026 that cleared a path for regulated platforms to offer perpetual futures. A late-Friday no-action letter then allowed regulated exchanges to convert expiring perp-style contracts into true perpetuals.
That letter expires at the end of June 2026. The window is short, which makes Kraken's timing the story. Going first counts only if the framework holds past July.
Kalshi passed $1 billion in perpetual futures volume within its first week, according to CoinDesk. That is the second signal. Domestic demand was waiting for a legal door.
Hyperliquid still owns the offshore market, with deep liquidity and professional flow. Kraken is betting that regulation plus one wallet can pull some of that volume onshore. The number to watch is not the launch count. It is where the next month of volume lands.
Kraken's choice to launch through Bitnomial before July was the right move because the CFTC window is short and offshore liquidity will not wait.
Before July 1, watch whether the CFTC extends the no-action letter or lets it expire without a replacement framework.
