Kraken just launched regulated crypto leverage for US traders. It had to buy an exchange to make it happen.
US traders have been locked out of the global perps market for years. Kraken just built the first regulated domestic version, and it required buying an exchange to do it.

- →Kraken launched CFTC-regulated perpetual futures for US clients on Kraken Pro today, covering nine assets including BTC, ETH, and SOL.
- →Kraken got here by acquiring Bitnomial, a CFTC-regulated exchange, giving it the regulatory infrastructure to bring domestic perps to US retail for the first time at scale.
- →If Coinbase Derivatives or another licensed US exchange files for CFTC perps listing authority before Q4 2026, the regulatory template is confirmed and the market expands beyond Kraken.
- perpetual futures → A leveraged bet on a crypto asset's price with no expiration date, kept open by a small fee exchanged between buyers and sellers every few hours.
- CFTC → The US government agency that regulates derivatives markets. If a product is CFTC-regulated, it operates under official US federal oversight rather than offshore rules.
Kraken turned on perpetual futures for US clients today. Nine assets: BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, ADA, LINK, DOGE, LTC, and AVAX.
The contracts run on Bitnomial, a CFTC-regulated exchange that Kraken's parent, Payward, acquired to enable this. Clearing goes through NinjaTrader Clearing, operating as Kraken Derivatives US, a CFTC-registered clearing firm. That is two layers of US regulatory cover under one roof.
If you're a US trader who has been routing perps through offshore venues, this is the domestic version. Funding settles on an 8-hour cycle: 7:00 p.m., 3:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. CT. The contracts sit in the same futures wallet as Kraken's CME-listed products, so spot, CME futures, and perps share one interface.
The scale context: perps are the dominant instrument in global crypto. Kraken puts 2025 global perps volume above $60 trillion. That is Kraken's own figure from its launch post, not independently confirmed. But even at half that number, this is officially the largest single product category US retail traders have been locked out of until today.
This is Kraken's third derivatives move in a year. CME futures launched in July 2025. US margin trading opened earlier this month.
Now CFTC-regulated perps. The sequencing is not accidental.
CME already has the regulated infrastructure. Its decision not to move on retail crypto leverage before Q3 2026 is writing Kraken's competitive moat for them.
If Coinbase Derivatives or another licensed US exchange files for CFTC perps listing authority before Q4 2026, the regulatory template is confirmed and the market expands beyond Kraken.
