BitMine bought 42,197 ETH last week. The Defiant reported the figure Tuesday, citing BitMine's own holdings update published Monday. The purchase was worth about $73 million.
The bigger number is 5,742,237 ETH. BitMine says that is now its total position, equal to roughly 4.8% of ETH's circulating supply. That is not a side bet. That is market structure.
Tom Lee, Fundstrat's strategist, chairs BitMine as an Ethereum treasury company. The model is familiar from Strategy's Bitcoin playbook: raise capital, buy the coin, make the balance sheet the story. The difference is that ETH already runs staking, DeFi collateral, stablecoins, and gas payments.
If you're holding ETH, this matters for a simple reason. A single public company claiming almost 5% of supply changes how every future buy, sale, lockup, or financing reads. Your bag now has a named whale with quarterly filings and shareholder pressure attached.
The catch is proof. On-chain verification of the 5.74 million ETH position was not available at press time. The supply math checks out against about 119.6 million ETH outstanding, but press-release math is still press-release math.
The tape matches the story for now. BitMine bought again, the number got bigger, and the next update has to show whether the coins are as visible as the headline.
BitMine's choice to keep buying before independent wallet-level proof is the weak point, because 4.8% of ETH supply is too large to treat as a press-release number.
Before BitMine's next weekly holdings update, watch for public wallet labels or auditor confirmation matching at least 5,742,237 ETH.
