Sui just shipped the code for gasless stablecoin transfers. The feature is still off on mainnet.
The v1.72.2 release builds the full gasless infrastructure and then leaves it disabled, waiting for protocol version 125 to pull the trigger.

- →Sui mainnet-v1.72.2 runs Protocol Version 124 and ships a seven-token gasless stablecoin allowlist and a $0.01 minimum transfer threshold.
- →Gasless transactions stay off on mainnet pending a follow-up token configuration at Protocol Version 125, making this release infrastructure-only.
- →Operators running the RPC indexer should plan a restart window: the rpc-index DB bumped to version 4 and will re-index on startup.
- protocol version → A numbered flag that tells Sui validators which set of rules are active; features tied to a higher number don't run until validators upgrade past that version.
- gasless transactions → A setup where a third party pays the network fee on your behalf, so you can send stablecoins without holding Sui's native token.
- re-indexing → When a node rebuilds its local database from scratch after a schema change, which can take hours depending on how much transaction history it stores.
Sui mainnet-v1.72.2 shipped today, tagged as Protocol Version 124. The feature everyone will notice in the release notes is gasless stablecoin transfers. The switch is still off on mainnet.
Mysten Labs built the mechanism before turning it on. Gasless transactions land in the codebase at this version but stay disabled. Activation waits on a follow-up token configuration tied to Protocol Version 125, which isn't part of this release.
At the contract level, the infrastructure is real. The release defines a seven-token allowlist: USDC, USDSUI, SUI_USDE, USDY, FDUSD, AUSD, and USDB. The minimum transfer threshold is $0.01 per stable. Gas meter accounting gets a new gas_model_version bump to 12. Address balance tracking, coin reservation logic, and the accumulator stack are all bundled behind the same version gate.
This is a staged deployment. The code ships in version 124. The feature activates in 125. If you've shipped distributed systems before, you recognize the pattern: land the code, validate it quietly in production state, then flip the flag. The tradeoff is that the announcement and the reality don't line up on the same day.
That gap matters if you're building something that depends on gasless UX. Sending USDC without holding SUI is not available on mainnet today.
What is live: a fix for the CLI command sui client send-funds. It had been returning "Insufficient balance ... Coin balance: 0" regardless of the sender's actual balance. If you hit that bug, it's gone.
What needs attention before you restart: the rpc-index DB bumped to version 4. Any node running the RPC indexer will re-index on startup. Depending on object-history size, that's not a short window. Plan the downtime.
Protocol Version 125 is where the gasless activation lives. That's the release to watch.
Mysten Labs shipped the gasless code and left the activation criteria unpublished. Developers targeting the allowlist don't know what the version-125 token configuration requires, and that's the catch.
Watch the Protocol Version 125 release to confirm whether gasless actually turns on or hits another staged gate, before Q3 2026.
