Five former Ethereum researchers launched Ethlabs. The crisis is now a model.
Ethereum has talked for years about shared protocol stewardship. The uncomfortable part is that it took an EF talent leak to make it real.

- →Five former Ethereum Foundation researchers launched Ethlabs, an independent nonprofit lab backed by major ETH-linked companies and investors.
- →The useful idea is not replacing the EF, but turning Ethereum research into a system with more than one serious center.
- →Watch whether Ethlabs ships credible protocol work within 6 months, not whether funders keep praising the model.
- Ethereum Foundation → The nonprofit group that funds and coordinates much of Ethereum's core protocol research and development.
- protocol research → Work on the rules and engineering choices that decide how Ethereum itself runs.
- stablecoin → A crypto token designed to track a normal currency, usually the U.S. dollar.
- tokenized assets → Real-world financial assets represented as tokens on a blockchain.
Ethlabs starts with five former Ethereum Foundation researchers. Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma are now building outside the EF.
That matters. CoinDesk reports at least eight senior EF departures over the past five months. This is not just staff churn. It is Ethereum accidentally testing the governance model it has claimed to want.
Ethlabs is an independent nonprofit R&D lab. Its backers include SharpLink Gaming, Bitmine Immersion Technologies, Joe Lubin, Anchorage Digital, Octant, and SNZ, per CoinDesk. The funding will run through an independent grants administrator. Funders get transparency reports, not control over technical direction.
That buffer is the whole design. If it works, Ethereum gets another serious research node without turning protocol work into sponsor work. If it fails, the lab becomes another place where wealthy ETH holders buy proximity to the roadmap.
The tradeoff is speed for institutional weight. The EF was slow, political, and sometimes brittle. It also had legitimacy built over years of boring process. Ethlabs can move faster, but it has to earn trust the hard way: by shipping research that core developers actually use.
If you're building on Ethereum, this is not inside baseball. Ethlabs says its agenda covers faster settlement, more mainnet capacity, and infrastructure for stablecoins and tokenized assets. Those are not side quests. RWA.xyz showed Ethereum at 53% of the stablecoin market as of June 22. It also showed a $32B tokenized real-world asset market, with Ethereum holding about half.
CoinDesk separately cited a $300B global stablecoin market. That number is not just investor bait. It explains why companies around Ethereum want protocol research to stay funded, even if the EF is losing people again.
The code does what the organization can support. Ethereum's old bet was that one foundation could coordinate research while pretending not to be a control center. Ethlabs makes the opposite bet: split the work, publish the reasoning, and let multiple groups carry the protocol.
The model is useful, for now. But it only becomes real if Ethlabs produces EF-caliber work without inheriting the EF's authority. The first output matters more than the launch list.
Ethlabs has to land one concrete protocol research artifact that core developers review seriously, because donor insulation means little without EF-level technical output.
Within 6 months, watch for at least one Ethlabs-authored proposal or research note discussed in an Ethereum core developer call or client-team issue thread.
