Apple threatened to terminate Craig Raw's developer account by June 30, 2026. Raw built Sparrow Wallet, a widely used Bitcoin wallet for desktop.
The trigger was a placeholder app Raw submitted to the App Store in August 2025. He built it to warn users about counterfeit Sparrow apps. Apple rejected it for 'placeholder content,' then escalated to an account termination threat.
That's the catch. More than a dozen fake Sparrow apps have appeared in the App Store since 2023, per Protos. At least one user, known online as 'Bitcoin Jimmy,' reportedly lost 7.4 BTC after entering his seed phrase into a counterfeit. Raw holds US trademarks on the Sparrow name and has been reporting the fakes to Apple since early 2024. They kept coming back, most recently in April 2026.
The code-signing certificate is what's really at stake. Sparrow for macOS ships from Raw's own website, not the Mac App Store. macOS Gatekeeper uses the Apple Developer ID to verify the binary at install time. No certificate means all new macOS installs fail. Development ends.
The appeal math is not good. Apple's own 2025 transparency data shows it terminated 193,000+ developer accounts and reversed only 499 of 10,127 appeals. That's about 5%. Raw says he believes the flag is machine-generated and fears his account will be terminated before a human reviews his appeal.
If you're running Sparrow on macOS, your current install works. New installs and updates are what stop after June 30.

If Apple hasn't reversed Raw's account termination before June 30, 2026, Sparrow for macOS stops shipping updates and the counterfeit apps that triggered the dispute stay live.
