SEC approved QBTC, Nasdaq's Bitcoin index options product. It cannot trade until the CFTC signs off.
QBTC would let retail traders hedge a single bitcoin at a time. The question is whether the CFTC cooperates.

- →The SEC conditionally approved Nasdaq PHLX to list QBTC, cash-settled Bitcoin index options tracking the CME CF Bitcoin Real Time Index.
- →QBTC's 1-BTC contract size is smaller than CME's standard 5-BTC Bitcoin options, making volatility hedging more accessible to retail bitcoin holders.
- →Watch for CFTC approval or exemptive relief for QBTC; without it, the SEC order doesn't move the product to market.
- cash-settled → When an options contract expires, you receive or pay U.S. dollars instead of actual bitcoin.
- European-style options → An options contract you can only exercise on the expiration date, not before.
The SEC just approved QBTC, a 1-BTC cash-settled Bitcoin index options product from Nasdaq PHLX. The approval is conditional: trading cannot start until the CFTC grants permission or exemptive relief.
QBTC would track the CME CF Bitcoin Real Time Index and settle in U.S. dollars. Per CoinDesk, each contract carries a $100 multiplier. CME's standard Bitcoin options require 5 BTC. That is five times the exposure, per contract.
If you're holding bitcoin and want downside protection, QBTC is built for your size. CME's 5-BTC minimum shuts out most retail traders. A 1-BTC product changes that.
And that's the catch right now: the CFTC still has to agree. The SEC published its order today. The CFTC has not set a timeline for review. Until it does, QBTC exists on paper and nowhere near a trading screen.
The CFTC's silence on timing is the only thing that matters now. Every quarter it stalls is free money for CME's 5-BTC incumbent contract. Retail bitcoin holders have a paper hedge and no trading screen.
CFTC approval or exemptive relief for QBTC within six months of today's SEC order. No CFTC action by November 2026 means QBTC hasn't traded a single contract.
