SBI just picked Solana over Corda. Japan's finance giants are choosing public networks now.
The Corda era promised private bank chains. SBI's pivot says the next fight is over distribution, not permission.

- →SBI Holdings rebranded SBI R3 Japan as SBI Solana Global and added the Solana Foundation to the venture.
- →The move matters because SMFG is still involved, giving the public-chain pivot real Japanese bank weight.

- Corda → Corda is a private blockchain system built for banks and companies that want controlled access.
- public chain → A public chain is a blockchain anyone can use directly, like Solana or Ethereum.
- RWA tokenization → RWA tokenization means putting claims on real assets, like bonds or funds, onto a blockchain.
SBI's Solana turn is the story. CoinDesk put SBI's Bitbank deal near $289 million, but that was context on July 13. The bigger move is SBI rebranding SBI R3 Japan as SBI Solana Global.
This is not a normal partner swap. SBI is moving a venture built around R3's private Corda network toward Solana, a public chain. The new plan covers stablecoin issuance, RWA tokenization, and AI-agent payment infrastructure. CoinDesk says the Solana Foundation has joined the venture.
The bet is simple: Japan's institutional crypto race is moving from permission to open markets. Corda made sense for banks that wanted control. Solana makes sense for issuers that want assets to reach buyers. If you're holding SOL, this institutional story matters because it touches distribution.
SMFG is the quiet detail. Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group is one of Japan's three megabanks. It remains a shareholder in the joint venture. That gives the pivot more weight than a startup choosing a faster chain.
There is a 1990s market-plumbing echo here. The winners were not the firms with the prettiest private ledgers. They were the firms connected to the deepest pools of buyers. Tokenized treasuries, stablecoins, and onchain funds have the same problem again.
SBI says the initiative aims to make Japan a core hub for onchain finance in Asia. The pitch is to connect Japan's domestic market to global liquidity. That can sound soft, but here it has teeth. SBI is also buying Bitbank for about $289 million, according to CoinDesk.
And that's the catch: this is still a reported pivot, not a verified product launch. The brief points to CoinDesk's report, not a direct SBI announcement URL. So the clean read is narrow: SBI's Corda reversal is a public-chain vote from a serious Japanese finance player. The backing layer just got real, for now.
SBI has until year-end to put a yen stablecoin or tokenized fund pilot on Solana, or SBI Solana Global is just a louder name.
By December 31, 2026, watch whether SBI Solana Global launches a live stablecoin or RWA product on Solana with SMFG named as a participant.
