Bybit just launched Tether Gold options. The real audience is old gold desks.
XAUT is no longer just a token you hold. Bybit is trying to make it something commodity desks can quote, hedge, and move in size.

- →Bybit launched USDT-settled options on Tether Gold, with each contract tied to one tokenized ounce of physical gold.
- →The important part is the RFQ setup with Orbit Markets, which points at institutional desks instead of retail traders.
- →Watch whether other major exchanges list XAUT options before Q4, because one venue is a test and two is a market.
- XAUT → XAUT is Tether Gold, a token that represents ownership of one troy ounce of physical gold.
- Options → Options are contracts that let traders bet on, hedge, or lock in future price moves.
- RFQ → RFQ means request for quote, where a client asks a trading desk for a custom price and deal size.
- OTC → OTC means a trade done directly between parties instead of through a public order book.
One ounce of tokenized gold now has options on Bybit. The exchange launched European-style contracts on Tether Gold, or XAUT. Each contract matches one XAUT token, which represents one troy ounce of physical gold. The contracts settle in USDT.
The launch matters because this is not a retail shiny-object listing. Bybit paired the product with Orbit Markets and an RFQ system for OTC deals. That lets institutional clients request custom strikes, expiries, and sizes. The real buyer here is a commodity desk with risk to manage.
That is the part worth watching. XAUT options existed before on smaller platforms like CoinCall, which listed them in November 2024. Bybit changes the distribution. A top-tier crypto exchange with a dedicated market maker makes tokenized gold look less like a buy-and-hold novelty.
Orbit is not random crypto plumbing either. CoinDesk reported that its team includes former senior precious-metals executives. That includes Deutsche Bank's former APAC head of currencies and precious metals. Gold options already have a serious market off-chain. CME, India's MCX, and OTC desks dominate that business.
If you're holding XAUT, your bag just became easier to hedge. That doesn't make tokenized gold more valuable by itself. It makes the market around it more useful. The trading layer just got real, for now.
Bybit has also been building around gold all year. XAUT perpetual contracts came first. XAUT Earn followed in March 2026. CryptoBriefing says Bybit and Tether also ran a Golden Season promotion with over $1 million in gold-backed rewards.
The date is slightly messy. CryptoBriefing puts the launch on June 12, 2026. CoinDesk covered the dedicated market on June 16, 2026. That four-day gap looks like delayed coverage, not a different event.
The bigger point is simple. Tokenized commodities need more than custody and a ticker. They need ways to hedge, quote, and trade size without clicking through a thin order book. Bybit's RFQ setup is the first serious sign that crypto gold wants the useful parts of old gold markets, not just the token wrapper.
Tether is leaving XAUT half-built if it stops at Bybit, because one RFQ venue proves demand but doesn't create a deep market.
By the end of Q3 2026, watch whether another top-tier exchange lists XAUT options or Bybit announces additional XAUT expiry dates.
